THE SHORT FILM, CONTINGENCY.
That is the whole big reason why me and my friends created @thetalentfever (on instagram)
It is not only inspiring, it is promising. The promise is that my degree in arts was and is for a good cause and even better, my dream to make people more aware about art and how it can save lives and feed families is getting closer each day.
In my final third year at the University of Dar es salaam, I met amazing new talents that prove me right each day in everything I saw in them, and some of these talents stepped into big shoes to actually start creating and acting in their own short films.
Meet Joshua Edward, who not only has been a college colleague but also a good friend of mine. He tells us a little bit about his short film "Contingency" which means a possibility of an occurrence of an event but can not be predicted with certainty. (hope i did not just lie)
B.A: so, Josh, what was the whole idea behind the short film "Contingency"?
Josh:It's funny because at first all i wanted was to kiss a girl in front of the camera and i ended up actually processing the whole idea in my mind and thought, hey! why not? and I spoke to one of my friends "Sabri Ateeq" (in his own words, one of the "director" and "the guy that shot the film") and he told me we could actually make more of the kissing scene than just a kiss and so he developed the whole idea and said i am going to have flash backs and depression and he was the one that came up with the name "Contingency".
B.A: what difficulties did you face from the beginning to the end of making the film?
Josh: well first, we had a lighting problem, rented extra lights which was ten thousand a day but when we couldn't provide enough light, so we ended up using natural light and i wasted my money which couldn't get it back,
At first ,we wanted to use nikon d90 with a 50 mm lens but during production the nikon malfunctioned and we ended up using canon 1300, 18-55 mm lens and other problems are just the usual problems actress arriving late, and cash plus we did not have sound equipments so we can said were going to do voice over but we couldn't get any studio and the movie had to be silent.
B.A: so what is next? is this short clip just a clip or should society start getting excited?
Josh: SOCIETY SHOULD GET EXCITED! we are working on something and we will soon get there. The plan is to get the Tanzanian film industry and African movies to the next level. It could take us years before we actually release what we have behind the curtains but we are heading there, till then, I am not giving any spoilers.
B.A: Oh come on! no spoilers? okay, how about what is "your" plan?what should we expect from Josh?
Josh: Okay, maybe i will give a bit of a spoiler in this one.
I am working on a piece, I am currently doing the final writing, the film is called "Malikia" and I will be telling an ordinary story in a very different way, hopefully in three or four months it will be out, and don't worry! this time, we will have dialogue.
B.A:okay, a question that everyone is thinking right now. what do you think about bongo movie?
Josh: I think they are okay, technology changes and that helps. Through contingency i realized that people want to watch good films but the problem is who can deliver it? overall i think we are heading in a nice direction because so many people especially the youth are joining the industry, bringing new experiences and ideas, honestly, I think we are going to make it.
So.... hope you guys fell in love with Josh as much as i have with his work. We are heading somewhere and it is about damn time that actual talented and educated people, (people who actually invest their time and money to know about art)to grab the industry by the tail and start dragging it where it should be. Don't get me wrong, there are so many good people in the film industry but a new talent never hurt no body. All I can ask you my dear readers is that you support our film industry and you support Josh cause he is going to win the Oscars someday.
With that being said, please start showing love by following his channel and watching his film.
